Aricept (doe-NEP-ah-zil) is used to treat the symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Aricept will not cure Alzheimer's disease, and it will not stop the disease from getting worse. However, it can improve thinking ability in some patients. Aricept is used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Aricept is in a class of medications called cholinesterase inhibitors. It improves mental function by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain. Aricept comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day, at bedtime, with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Aricept exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Aricept and increase your dose after 4 to 6 weeks.
