Clarinex

Clarinex (des-LOR-at-a-deen) is an antihistamine. It is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and hives of the skin. Antihistamines work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body. Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult. Histamine can also cause some persons to have hives, with severe itching of the skin. Clarinex is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form: Oral Syrup (U.S.) Tablets (U.S. and Canada) Oral disintegrating tablets (U.S.)

Clarinex is used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms, including sneezing; runny nose; and red, itchy, tearing eyes. It is also used to treat hives. Clarinex is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Clarinex may cause less drowsiness than other antihistamines.

Clarinex comes as a tablet and an orally disintegrating tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Clarinex exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. To take the orally disintegrating tablet, use dry hands to peel back the foil packaging. Immediately take out the tablet and place it on your tongue. The tablet will quickly dissolve and can be swallowed with saliva. Orally disintegrating tablets may be taken with or without water.
