Coreg (KAR-ve-dil-ole) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-adrenergic blocking agents, beta-blocking agents, or, more commonly, beta-blockers. Beta-blockers work by affecting the response to some nerve impulses in certain parts of the body. As a result, they decrease the heart's need for blood and oxygen by reducing its workload. They also help the heart to beat more regularly. Coreg is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled. Coreg also is used to prevent further worsening of congestive heart failure. It is used to treat left ventricular dysfunction after a heart attack. Left ventricular dysfunction occurs when the left ventricle (the main pumping chamber of the heart) stiffens and enlarges and can cause the lungs to fill with blood. Coreg may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Coreg is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form(s): Oral Tablets (U.S.) Coreg is used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure. It also is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Coreg is a combination of two classes of drugs called beta-blockers and alpha-blockers. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so your heart does not have to pump as hard. Coreg is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Coreg comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken twice a day with food. You will start out taking a low dose of Coreg, and your doctor will increase your dose every 1 to 2 weeks until you are taking a dose that works well for you. When you start Coreg and whenever your doctor increases your dose you will be closely watched to make sure the dose is not too high for you. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Coreg exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Coreg controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure them. Your blood pressure should lower within 30 minutes and your symptoms of heart failure should begin to improve within the first hour of beginning Coreg. Continue taking Coreg even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Coreg without talking to your doctor. Abruptly stopping Coreg can worsen your symptoms. Your doctor will probably want to decrease your dose gradually over 1 to 2 weeks.
