EMLA

EMLA contains a mixture of 2 local anesthetics ( an-ess-THET-iks) , lidocaine ( LYE-doe-kane) and prilocaine ( PRIL-oh-kane) . It is used to produce numbness or loss of feeling before certain painful procedures, such as injections, drawing blood from a vein, or removing small growths (warts, for example) from the skin. EMLA deadens the nerve endings in the skin. It does not cause unconsciousness as general anesthetics used for surgery do. In the U.S. , EMLA is available only with your doctor's prescription. In Canada, it is available without a prescription. However, your doctor may have special instructions on the proper use and dose, depending on the reason you are using this medicine.
