Furazolidone

Furazolidone (fyoor-a-ZOE-li-done ) is used to treat bacterial and protozoal (proe-toe-ZOE-al) infections. It works by killing bacteria and protozoa (tiny, one-celled animals). Some protozoa are parasites that can cause many different kinds of infections in the body. Furazolidone is taken by mouth. It works inside the intestinal tract to treat cholera, colitis, and/or diarrhea caused by bacteria, and giardiasis (jee-ar-DYE-a-siss) . Furazolidone is sometimes given with other medicines for bacterial infections. Furazolidone may cause some serious side effects when taken with certain foods, beverages, or other medicines. Check with your health care professional for a list of products that should be avoided. Furazolidone is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage forms: Oral Oral suspension (U.S.) Tablets (U.S.)

Furazolidone is used to treat infectious diarrhea and enteritis caused by bacteria or protozoans. Furazolidone is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Furazolidone comes as a tablet and a liquid to take by mouth. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Furazolidone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
