Gemzar

Gemzar (jem-SITE-a-been ) belongs to the group of medicines called antimetabolites. It is used to treat cancer of the breast,pancreas and lung. It may also be used to treat other kinds of cancer, as determined by your doctor. Gemzar interferes with the growth of cancer cells, which are eventually destroyed. Since the growth of normal cells may also be affected by the medicine, other effects will also occur. Some of these may be serious and must be reported to your doctor. Other effects, like hair loss, may not be serious but may cause concern. Some effects may occur after treatment with Gemzar has been stopped. Gemzar is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form: Parenteral Injection (U.S. and Canada)

Your doctor has ordered the drug gemcitabine to help treat your illness. The drug is given by injection into your vein. Gemzar is used to treat: adenocarcinoma of the pancreas Gemzar is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Gemcitabine is in a class of drugs known as pyrimidine analogs; it slows or stops the growth of cancer cells. The length of treatment depends on the types of drugs you are taking, how well your body responds to them, and the type of cancer you have.
