Hepsera (a-DEF-oh-veer) is used to treat adults with chronic infections of active hepatitis B. Hepsera is not a cure for the hepatitis B virus, but it may lower the amount of hepatitis B virus in your body. It may also lower the ability of the virus to multiply in your body. Hepsera is used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus) in patients who have symptoms of the disease. Hepsera is in a class of medications called nucleotide analogs. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the body. Hepsera will not cure hepatitis B and may not prevent complications of chronic hepatitis B such as cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. Hepsera may not prevent the spread of hepatitis B to other people. Hepsera comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take Hepsera at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.
