Ketek (tel-ith-roe-MYE-sin) belongs to the family of medicines called antibiotics. Antibiotics are medicines used in the treatment of infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, Ketek will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections. Ketek is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage forms: Oral Tablets (U.S. and Canada)
Ketek is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as bronchitis (infection of the airways that lead to the lungs), pneumonia (infection of the lungs), and sinus infections. Ketek is in a class of medications called ketolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Ketek comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food once a day for 5 to 10 days. To help you remember to take Ketek, take it around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Ketek exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets whole; do not split, chew, or crush them. You should start to feel better early in your treatment. Call your doctor if your condition does not improve while you are taking Ketek. Take Ketek until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better. If you stop taking Ketek too soon, your infection may not be cured and bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.
