Mepron ( a-TOE-va-kwone) is used to treat and to prevent Pneumocystis carinii (noo-moe-SISS-tis ) pneumonia (PCP), a very serious kind of pneumonia. This particular kind of pneumonia occurs commonly in patients whose immune systems are not working normally, such as cancer patients, transplant patients, and patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Mepron comes as a liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken with food every 8 hours for 21 days. Always take Mepron with snacks or meals.
