Nalidixic Acid

Nalidixic (nal-i-DIX-ik) acid is used to treat infections of the urinary tract. It may be used for other problems as determined by your doctor. Nalidixic Acid is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage forms: Oral Tablets (U.S. and Canada)

Nalidixic Acid, an antibiotic, eliminates bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Nalidixic Acid is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Nalidixic Acid comes as a caplet and a liquid to take by mouth. Nalidixic Acid usually is taken four times a day for 7-14 days and is sometimes taken in smaller doses for longer periods of time. Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Take Nalidixic Acid with a full glass of water on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Nalidixic Acid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
