Orap

Orap ( PIM-oh-zide) is used to treat the symptoms of Tourette's syndrome. It is meant only for patients with severe symptoms who cannot take or have not been helped by other medicine. Orap works in the central nervous system to help control the vocal outbursts and uncontrolled, repeated movements of the body (tics) that interfere with normal life. It will not completely cure the tics, but will help to reduce their number and severity. Orap may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Orap is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form: Oral Tablets (U.S. and Canada)

Orap is used to control tics (unusual movements or sounds that the patient may be able to hold back for a short time but cannot really control) caused by Tourette's disorder. Orap should only be used in patients who cannot take other medications or who have taken other medications without good results. Orap should only be used to treat severe tics that stop the patient from learning, working, or performing normal activities. Orap is in a class of medications called antipsychotics. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

Orap comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food once a day at bedtime or twice a day. To help you remember to take Orap, take it around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Orap exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Orap and gradually increase your dose, not more than once 2 or 3 days. Orap controls Tourette's disorder but does not cure it. It may take some time before you feel the full benefit of Orap. Continue to take Orap even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Orap without talking to your doctor. You may experience a serious reaction if you suddenly stop taking Orap. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually.
