Valdecoxib (val-de-KOX-ib ) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also called NSAIDs) are used to relieve some symptoms caused by arthritis (rheumatism), such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. However, Valdecoxib does not cure arthritis and will help you only as long as you continue to take it. It may also be used to treat pain associated with menstrual periods. Valdecoxib is used to relieve the pain, tenderness, inflammation (swelling), and stiffness caused by arthritis and to treat painful menstrual periods. Valdecoxib is in a class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications called COX-2 inhibitors. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain and inflammation. Valdecoxib comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food once or twice a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Valdecoxib exactly as directed.
