Wytensin (GWAHN-a-benz) belongs to the general class of medicines called antihypertensives. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure adds to the work load of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled. Wytensin works by controlling nerve impulses along certain nerve pathways. As a result, it relaxes blood vessels so that blood passes through them more easily. This helps to lower blood pressure. Wytensin is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form: Oral Tablets (U.S.)
Wytensin is used to treat high blood pressure. It works by decreasing your heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body. Wytensin is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information. Wytensin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken twice a day at evenly spaced intervals. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Wytensin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Wytensin controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Continue to take Wytensin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Wytensin without talking to your doctor. Abruptly stopping Wytensin may increase blood pressure and cause unwanted side effects.
