Xeloda (ka-pe-SITE-a-been ) belongs to the group of medicines called antimetabolites. It is used to treat breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Xeloda interferes with the growth of cancer cells, which are eventually destroyed. Since the growth of normal cells may also be affected by the medicine, other effects will also occur. Some of these may be serious and must be reported to your doctor. Other effects may not be serious but may cause concern. Your doctor has ordered the drug Xeloda to help treat your illness. The drug is taken by mouth with tablets. Take Xeloda with water within 30 minutes after eating a meal. Xeloda is in a class of drugs known as antimetabolites. Xeloda resembles a normal cell nutrient needed by cancer cells to grow. The cancer cells take up the Xeloda, which then interferes with their growth.
