Zileuton

Zileuton (zye-LOO-ton) is used by patients with mild to moderate chronic asthma to decrease the symptoms of asthma and the number of acute asthma attacks. However, Zileuton should not be taken to relieve an asthma attack that has already started. Zileuton is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage form(s): Oral Tablets (U.S.)

Zileuton is used to prevent asthma symptoms. It works by blocking the formation of substances that cause inflammation, fluid retention, mucous secretion, and constriction in your lungs. Zileuton is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Zileuton comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Zileuton exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Zileuton controls asthma symptoms but does not cure them. Continue to take Zileuton even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Zileuton without talking to your doctor.
